Spelling Rules Worth Knowing

Maybe the only rules of English that are always true.

1.Words ending in a consonant preceded by a single vowel require the consonant be doubled.
example: hit - hitting

2.Words following CVCe pattern require dropping the e before adding ing.
example: save - saving

3.The letter q is always followed by a u.
example: quit

4.English words do not end in v.
example: love

5.Words that end in y preceded by a consonant change the y to i before adding es or ed;
example: fry - fries -fried

-if y is preceded by a vowel, just add s to make it plural. example: valley - valleys
